God gifts people to accomplish His purposes. Spiritual gifts are given to the church to build the whole church. When each person serves within their area of giftedness the work is more enjoyable, and the church thrives. Remember it is for His purpose and His timing, which means He can gift people for a season, or for a lifetime in a particular area. The reality is that some people aren't sure how God has gifted them. This can be due to lack of understanding, or not enough experiences. Here are some suggestions for helping you in the process of discovery.
- Study the spiritual gifts listed in scripture (Romans 12, 1Corinthians 12, 1Corinthians 14, Ephesians 4). What are they? How do we get them? What are they for?
- Take spiritual gifts surveys. Keep in mind most spiritual gift surveys are subjective, meaning that your attitudes and moods at the time of the test can influence the outcome, but they can help point you in a direction. Try new things. We at Beautiful Savior want to give people the freedom to test an area without feeling the obligation to continue. Ministry should become a joyful experience rather than a job that sucks the life out of you. We also strongly believe that failure is a significant part of the learning process. Billy Graham didn't become a significant evangelist over night. It was as he became faithful with a little, as he recognized who he was in Christ, that God was able to use him for great things. - Ask people who know you well what they think your gifting is. Again this is a subjective method, but the more people you are able to ask the clearer the picture will be for you. Your friends know your strength as well as your weaknesses. As observers they can often see things that you aren't able to see.
- Experience is also a good teacher. Check out the current volunteer openings to see if there is something that interests you. If so, you can contact the volunteer leader or office staff to find out how you can get involved. Make sure you communicate your intentions, especially if you just want to try something new. It may be possible to shadow someone who is already serving in a particular function.
